Accessibility Study of Touch and Gesture Interaction with Seniors

Context

At a time when we witness a mass introduction of new applications with touch and gesture interfaces it is relevant to question if these interfaces present a positive differential towards accessibility by Senior population and if it is possible at this time to distill specific design heuristics that would favor appropriation by Seniors.

With this proposal we intent to study the potential and limitations of touch and gesture interfaces by employing comparative studies of specific interaction design proposals, and through those design proposals validate heuristics for touch and gesture interaction designs for seniors.

Objectives

This project follows a Design Research approach, and will aim at the design and prototyping of specific interaction design proposals, towards the following goals:

a) study the current state-of-the-art in interaction design for seniors;
b) study the current state of the art in touch and gesture technologies;
c) propose a set of heuristics for touch and gesture interaction design for seniors;
d) conceive and perform interaction design proposals for validating the proposed heuristics;

Results

This project was realized as part of André Abrahão’s MDM Dissertation.
A set of design guidelines were proposed and a demo game based on the “vindimas” theme was developed and tested for data collection as feedback to revise the guidelines.

A paper was published at the SBGames 2013, São Paulo, Brasil.
